There are a series of severe medical issues that have been linked to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs, or SSRI. These medicines are most commonly used to treat depression or anxiety. While many of these drugs, including Paxil and Zoloft have become very popular, doctors and the FDA have discovered a series of severe issues that go along with use.
There have been substantiated cases where patients that took Paxil or related drugs faced the following:
- Birth defects, including the development of severe heart issues for newborns. The FDA found that the risk of Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn, or PPHN, increases by 600% when an expecting mother takes Paxil after the 20th week of pregnancy. The FDA asked Paxil’s manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), to issue stronger warning including a Category D warning, which the FDA says “means that studies in pregnant women (controlled or observational) have demonstrated a risk to the fetus.”
- There is also concern over serotonin syndrome, which is linked to SSRI drugs. This syndrome can be life threatening and has a range of symptoms from shaking to flu-like syndrome to a coma.
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts.
These can include the following drugs:
- Celexa (citalopram)
- Lexapro (escitalopram)
- Paxil (paroxetine)
- Prozac (fluoxetine)
- Symbyax (olanzapine/fluoxetine)
- Zoloft (sertraline)
If your family has been exposed to any of these drugs and has exhibited any of these behaviors or symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately. The experienced team at a large firm may be able to help hold the manufacturer responsible, as with one recent case against GSK worth $2.5 millions due to a birth defect linked to Paxil. A medical malpractice and product liability attorneys are usually the ones happy to help, as they will normally have with hundreds of similar cases.
